Spring ahead

It's officially spring time at our zone 5, upstate NY homestead!  Before I get too excited... that still means snow on the ground.  In fact, it's snowing outside, right now.

Cold. Wet. Heavy. Slushy. Snow.

Did I mention cold?

Admittedly, winter and the snow is beautiful!
Not really the spring time image of green, birds singing, and warm weather.

What does that mean for us?

For starters, daylight savings time recently hit us.  Mornings are a little rough... but we are forever thankful for the extra hour of light in the evening!  Day time temperatures are steadily rising above freezing, the snow is starting to thaw, and the floors in my house are perpetually covered in muddy paw prints.

Nighttime temperatures are still dipping into the teens and the garden beds are covered in a layer of snow and ice.

With increased daylight and real spring time weather on the horizon, that means we start seeing an uptick in our hens egg production, it's time to set eggs in the incubator, seed starting, planning, chores start getting a little easier (no more hauling buckets of water through drifts of snow)... and did I mention baby goats?  I don't think there's anything more fun or exciting than kids.

Stay tuned to learn about our recent homestead addition - Elle, Lulu, and Joey!
